🌧️ 5 Rainy Day Activities for Cubs & Scouts

No need to cancel — just switch it up!

Rainy weather doesn’t mean the fun has to stop.
Here are five brilliant indoor activities that need minimal prep, work brilliantly in a Scout hut or hall, and keep your Cubs and Scouts engaged, learning, and having fun — even when the skies open up.

1. 🎨 Badge Design Challenge

What You Need: Paper, colouring pencils or pens
How to Play:
Challenge Scouts or Cubs to design a brand-new badge for a fictional skill or achievement (e.g., “Marshmallow Master” or “Ultimate Tent Peg Finder”).
They must name it, draw it, and write what someone would have to do to earn it.

Why It Works: Creative, low energy, fun for any ability level — and leaders can judge or vote at the end!

2. 🎭 Skit in a Hat

What You Need: Slips of paper and a hat
How to Play:
Write random characters, situations, or actions on paper (e.g., “a Scout leader stuck in a tent,” “a campfire that sings,” etc.). In teams, Scouts draw three slips and create a quick silly skit based on what they pick!

Why It Works: Builds confidence, creativity, and teamwork — and always ends in laughter.

3. 🧩 Knot Relay

What You Need: A rope per team (and your knot instructions if needed!)
How to Play:
Set up a relay where each Scout must run to a station, tie a knot (e.g., reef knot, bowline), and return to tag the next team member. Fastest team wins — but knots must be tied correctly!

Why It Works: Combines physical energy with skill — and reinforces real badgework.

4. 📚 Story Circle

What You Need: Just imaginations!
How to Play:
Start a story with one sentence: “It was a stormy night at camp...” Then, go around the circle with each Scout adding one sentence at a time. Optional: write it down as you go and read it out dramatically at the end!

Why It Works: Great calm-down activity after energetic games — perfect for smaller groups or end of night.

5. ❓ Scout Trivia Showdown

What You Need: A list of questions (general knowledge, Scouting facts, or fun badge trivia!)
How to Play:
Split into teams and quiz it out! You can mix in silly questions, badge facts, and teamwork challenges.

Why It Works: Competitive, funny, and surprisingly educational.

☔ Bonus Tip: Keep an “Indoor Backup” Box

Have a ready-to-go stash with paper, pencils, a rope, and slips of paper — so you’re never caught out by the weather.
